The Most Important Beauty Ingredients to Avoid
Updated: May 14, 2019
One of the biggest issues with choosing safer beauty products is not knowing which ingredients to avoid. Ingredients in the personal care industry are extensive, difficult to pronounce, and sometimes even hard to find. Many companies don't even list their ingredients on the packaging.
But understanding what's actually in the products we use every day is vital to maintaining a safe, healthy lifestyle.
Two Ways To Know What To Avoid
My two favorite ways to find out what's in certain products and what ingredients are safe to use are the Environmental Working Group website and the BeautyCounter "Never List".
1. The EWG allows users to look up products, brands, and ingredients to understand their health and safety implications. The website gives a safety rating to help us making better choices on which products to totally scrap, which to use sparingly, and which ones to shout from the rooftops.
2. BeautyCounter created a "Never List" of some of the worst ingredients found in personal care products to help know what to avoid. This company does extensive research on skin care and makeup ingredients and goes above and beyond in excluding them from their products. Pull up this list on your phone and take a look through your cosmetic drawer. You won't regret it.
Is Switching to Clean Beauty Really Worth It?
Avoiding harmful ingredients in your personal care products protects not only you but the people you love. Clean beauty is not just a trend. It's a movement based on education and advocacy. It wasn't too long ago that smoking was considered OK, and even healthy. But once we learned how harmful it really was, the world started to change.
The same is true with clean beauty. We are just now starting to understand how dangerous many of the chemicals we've been applying directly on our skin can be. Now is the time to switch.
