My Toxic-Free Summer Makeup Routine
It's FINALLY warm here in New York City and the streets are peppered with patio seating, pups walking their owners, and park-bound New Yorkers eager for that long-awaited dose of Vitamin D. I spent Memorial Day Weekend packing away all our winter clothes, pulling out swim suits and shorts I forgot I owned, and perfecting my toxic-free, five-minute summer makeup routine.
The #1 Product for the Perfect Summer Makeup Routine
No matter what season it is, no makeup routine can be complete without SPF. This is even more important in spring and summer when we spend more time outside and increase our exposure to both UVA and UVB rays.
One way to protect your skin against the sun is by simply applying a toxic-free sunscreen before beginning your makeup routine. I, however, am all about products that work double duty, so I opt for a tinted moisturizer with built in SPF to keep things simple.
My Clean Beauty Summer Makeup Routine
This brings me to Step One of my summer makeup routine: the base layer.
I'm all about a full glam look for evenings and events, but on these hot summer days I just want something quick, easy, and sweat-proof. My go-to choice is the BeautyCounter Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer. I wear shade #2 and apply with either my fingers or a beauty sponge. With SPF 20 built in, this product leaves me with hydrated, glowy, even-toned skin.
Step Two of my routine is all about getting that sun-kissed look.
For this, I use the BeautyCounter Cream Blush Stick in the shade Hibiscus. Cream products are the holy grail of summer makeup and this blush stick is no exception. I apply this to my cheeks, eyelids, and lips for the perfect (and quick) touch of color all over.
Filling in my brows is a must-do for even my rushing-out-the-door days, so Step Three of my routine is all about brow gel.
I used to spend an embarrassing amount of time filling in my brows with a brow pencil and then setting them ever so slightly with a clear gel. But with the BeautyCounter Brilliant Brow Gel, I now accomplish both in one step. I use the shade dark and sweep this over and into my brows in half the time of my former routine. This stuff is high on my list of all time favorite products.
The fourth and final step of my makeup routine is, of course, mascara.
I am still on the hunt for my favorite toxic-free mascara (suggestions welcome!) but for now I'm opting for the Honest Company Extreme Length Mascara. Two coats of this (because I'm all about long lashes) and I'm out the door and on to Central Park.
Four simple steps for a quick summer glow and a whole bunch of confidence - in how I look, how I feel, and how safe I am from both the sun and the nasty chemicals found in so many makeup products still sold in the US. What are your summer clean beauty staples?
